walker
Walker Tobin was the ultimate connector, many friendships in the South Bay owe their start to an introduction from Walks. His bellowing laugh, infectious personality, and ability to relate to anyone, made him one of the most well-known and well-loved people in our community. Walker’s legacy is all about showing up for your friends, enjoying every day, and making sure that any stranger who enjoys fanta shots, shoot the roots, and the Denver Broncos doesn’t stay a stranger for long. He’s a reminder to always check in on your friends, even when they seem the happiest.
Hermosa Beach Trashball Tournament
Like most great ideas in Hermosa Beach, Trashball started with a group of guys drinking beers on the beach. 11 years later, the annual Sweet/Walker Memorial Cup Tournament is one of the premiere beach days of the summer.
Simply put, Trashball is just guys being dudes while incorporating football toss and drinking beers. Every year, 60+ individuals are paired into teams of two and compete for year-long bragging rights and a place in the history books! The South Bay is known worldwide as the home of the world’s best beach volleyball players and the these legends are etched into immortality on the Manhattan Beach Pier. More locally famous, the legends of Trashball are etched into immortality on Captain Ron’s Tournament Champion Board which proudly hangs in one of the South Bay’s favorite watering holes.
Sweets
Sweets was a beloved figure in our South Bay community, known for his welcoming nature and infectious smile. He had a unique ability to make everyone feel like a friend, especially after a few pints at the North End Bar where he could often be found passionately cheering on his Los Angeles Kings. His courageous cancer battle inspired everyone who knew him and his presence alone was enough to raise your spirits no matter what you had going on in your life. He will be remembered for the joy he brought to every gathering and the connections he forged in our lives. Sweets may be gone, but he remains forever in our hearts!
